What You Need to Know About Eating Disorders and Adolescents What is an Eating Disorder? Why is this epidemic rampaging our adolescents? What causes an Eating Disorder? How do I potentially identify one of my adolescents as having an Eating Disorder, and if so, then what? All of these questions will be answered and then some. Eating Disorders often go unrecognized until the adolescent is “full blown” into the addiction: Yes, an Addiction. Those attending this presentation will leave with an understanding of Eating Disorders (Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge/purge, Compulsive Overeating, etc.) and their origins. How to not only confront someone you might suspect of having an eating disorder but how to talk to the caregivers/parents. How Eating Disorders are often the core addiction but masked thru the use of other addiction or acting out behaviors such as chemical dependency, self-harm/mutilation, etc. Qualifies for nursing hours. Presented by Shades of Hope Treatment Center
Ethics Session: What Would You Do If…” Ever find yourself in an awkward situation in your professional life where you are not sure what to do? Do you do what is easiest or do you do what is ethical? Racial slurs, sexist comments, cursing and confidentiality breeches are just a few areas to be explored. Ethical decisions are sometimes clear, simple, and easily seen as the “right thing to do.” However, competent ethical decision making in social work practice is not always an easy task. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there is a tendency to be somewhat unaware of the professional expertise needed to guide competent and ethical practice. Social workers need to consciously integrate the professional knowledge, values, and skills into their daily work in order to perform in an ethical manner. Gretchen Denney, LMSW, CPS and Melissa Milliorn, LMSW, Hardin- Simmons University
Finding Your Way On The Lost Highway Have you ever been lost? Truly lost? Remember how it felt? The fear and confusion can sometimes be overwhelming and demoralizing. We face these same emotions when working with “adult weary” young people who seem at constant odds with our attempts to help them. As frustrations mount with each turn around a new corner, we become more and more entrenched into power struggles and conflict cycles that just won’t end. This powerful workshop will identify and explore positive intervention strategies that can be employed to help adults achieve success with the most challenging youth we work with. Kraig Stockstill, Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch
Human Trafficking (2 part session- must attend part 1 to attend part 2) It is estimated that 800,000 to 900,000 people are trafficked across international borders annually and approximately 300,000 American citizens are trafficked annually. This growing problem in American is often described as “modern day slavery” or “coerced labor”. Many victims are juveniles and children. We will define human trafficking and introduce investigative ways in handling these types of cases. We will identify ways to rescue these victims leading to prosecution of human traffickers and promote public awareness. Kathleen Murray, Ft. Worth Police Department
Negative Impact of Low Health Literacy It is alarming that 89 million Americans have low health literacy skills. The problem of low health literacy of parents can result in negative consequences related to the health and welfare
of children of all ages. Qualifies for nursing hours. Rita Johnston, RN
Teen Technology Use: A Crossroads on the Information Highway Social networking sites, Twitter, Sexting, Mobil Internet Devices (MIDs), Identity Theft, and schools infusing technology into the lessons. We will explore some of the current trends in unsafe internet use practices and safety rules that every user needs to know. We will focus less on the technology and more on the common sense and “conning” sense that students need to develop. Come have fun and learn some way to keep yourself safe. Rod Pruitt, Region 14 Education Service Center
